Convert to Dovecot from old DA version

I have a few DA servers but there are in various versions.
There are already some clients in each server.
How can I convert to Dovecot without any change to our clients?
(in every aspects, eg, POP3, pop3 webmail, IMAP, IMAP webmail, SMTP etc)

Should I upgrade DA to latest version first? And then convert to Dovecot?
How should I plan? How should I do?
