Hi all

I'm currently building a DirectAdmin Billing Interface. Just wondering if there is still a big call for other people to use something like this also.

The reason for building this is because I didn't like any of the ones currently out there and the ones I did were far too overpriced.

I'm thinking of making the first version fairly hardcodied and then make updates to it that are going to be more modular and customizable.

Would anyone out there be interested in this? Should I make it an open source program or one that I build, support and sell?

Thanks
Ian

Its probably going to take you a long time to write something that is up to the same level as some of the others out there. I don't like most of them either. I do like WHMCS the best and their new V4 is supposed to be out this week and the ones who have tried the RC release really like it. To buy it outright I think is about $325 which I don't think is bad for price.

My point is not to compare billing systems again, but I believe it will take you more time than its worth to write your own and be on that same level unless you have some specific needs that the others don't offer.

I don't mean to discourage you but also be realistic. Don't spend thousands of dollars of your time on something to save a few hundred. I recently considered doing the same thing but then realized I am not in the billing system business. I am in the web hosting business. I need to focus on that. You should focus on your core business.

Floyd, cheers for the reply.

I'm doing it for 2 reasons. Firstly so I can learn some more examples of PHP5 [not had much exposure to that tbh] and also because I really want to have a custom solution for my site.

I'm using the httpsocket created by, I think, l0rdphi1 so it's got a lot of the hassle out of the way. I'm finding the scripts fairly easy to work on and the hardest part will be linking PayPal into it to take payments.

Actually, PayPal linking is incredibly easy. So easy even I can do it :).

Wow so easy a caveman(aka Jeff Lasman) can do it! Impossible!

Remember, scsi, I'm not a programmer or a webdesigner; I'm a systems administrator.
