Hello,

I've had a server colocated in the racks of a company for some years now (2-3), however there seems to be a problem with the license I've purchased.

When I delivered my server to them I asked for a lifetime license which they sold me for 100€ ( +- 100$ ), when I look in my directadmin panel the license is registered to the name of the company where my server is located. I've asked them to change this several times before but they never did.

So now I'm wondering if I got ripped of, it seems like the license they sold me was just the one they used on there other servers?

Is it legal that they provided a server, which isn't there's at all, with a internal lifetime license (and also sold this license to the customer (me))

Hope someone here can clear this out for me.
Thanks in advance

An internal license is for the hosting company to use. They cannot sell you the license. The license is not yours.

If you want the license to be yours then YOU would have to create an account with DirectAdmin and purchase the license from DirectAdmin. You can do that with the server you have now.

There has been talk of DA creating a reseller program but I don't know if that ever came about. But it certainly was not in place 2 or 3 years ago when they "sold" you the license.

Whether you got ripped off or not is really for you to determine. A regular lifetime license is a lot more than $100 about 3 times more. It all depends on what they advertised and what you agreed to.

Was it legal for them to install it on a server they did not actually own? I don't know. It is housed in their facility. Send an email to DA and if they want to follow up on it they can.

Those are ISP licenses for use in their own network (datacenter license). They are owned by the ISP and basically you rent or lease a license from the ISP that way. Those licenses are only for use within the provider's network and can't (aren't allowed) to be taken to another provider.

It also means all the support goes through your ISP and not through Directadmin support. (hence the cheap price)

So no you didn't get ripped off unless the ISP told you the license is yours..

We provision these licenses with our rental servers or to customers who want us to provision their servers they bought with us.

See http://www.directadmin.com/internal.html for details on that type of license

There is NOT yet a reseller program, but there is a program wherein certain support comanies may qualify to resell their own services with a DirectAdmin license, on your server. Contact DirectAdmin Sales for more details.
