Several days ago I installed a script and my server died. I can't access anything...DA, sites, ftp, SSh. I don't have a server control panel such as one gets with cpanel, I just have DA.

Is there a way for me to login to DA so that I can delete this script? I've asked my hosting company for help but they haven't responded. I don't think they will.

Thanks,
Rick

You can edit any file using DirectAdmin File editor :) So, you can turn that script off.

I can't login to DA. The question is: Is there a way to login to DA after my server has crashed and the DA login page won't come up? All I get is "Navigation Cancelled." FTP says, "Can't resolve Host Name." SSH says, "Connection Cancelled." Hosting company won't help or even reply to email. I'm stumped.

You haen't given us your domain name so there's no way to tell, but your server may be completely shut down. In which case you have to restart it. If your hosting company hasn't given you a way to restart it (send a ticket, an email, whatever) or given you remote power management, then you've got a dead server that will stay dead forever.

It really seems that this issue has to be resolved with your hosting company.

Jeff

I don't have remote power management and my hosting company isn't answering support tickets or emails. I was hoping there was a way to get into DA so I could just
delete the script and restart everything through the system monitor. Guess I'm just screwed.

From what you've written it appears your server is actually not even running. There's no magic way to turn it back on.

If you want to prove otherwise then provide us with the IP#.

Jeff

ping works.

Something is running on port 25, but it may not be the mailserver; it never responds.

Something is running on port 21, but it may not be the ftp daemon; it never responds.

Something is running on port 22, but it may not be the shell daemon; it never responds.

No response on port 80 (http), 443 (https), or 2222 (DirectAdmin).

The problem could be anything: perhaps a massive system attack; perhaps a hacked system used by spammers or malware distributors, perhaps just a badly broken firewall, perhaps a simple runaway process keeping the server busy.

The IP# is owned by "Colo 4 Jax".

Are they your provider?

The whois service tells me the following about them:

colo4jax [email protected]
200 W. Forsythe
Jacksonville, FL 32202
US
904-535-7040
I don't know if the email address or the phone number will get you anywhere; the phone number is answered by a man who appears to only speak spanish.

If you can't reach them you might try their nameservice provider; also from the whois service:
Barnes, Ray [email protected]
Tical Network Solutions
112 West Adams Street
Jacksonville, FL 32202
US
904-722-0800

I don't know anything about them but I'd bet their email and phone number will work. Of course they may not be able to help you.

(I used to know everyone on the 'net in Jacksonville, but that was back in the 90s. I started my first webhosting business in Jacksonville in '95.)

Do you own the server? If so, I'd go pick it up.

If not, if you're renting it, then I sure hope (a) you have backups and (b) you haven't paid too far in advance.

Usually when this occurs the problem is a simple reboot. If they won't do that for you, then they're not providing the server.

Of course there's always the possibility they're sending you an email reply which you're not getting because they're on a blocked IP#. Since they don't publish an spf record there's no way to tell.

Of course I may be wrong; they may not even be Colo4Jax.

But that's all I can come up.

Obviously you can't use the server if you can't get into it.

And for the future: don't buy a product from somone you can't reach by email and telephone, and even by snailmail, depending on your comfort level. Do your due diligence before you buy.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the info. I don't understand most of it. I had extensive email communication with the owner and was led to believe his company owns the server and it is located in Livonia MI which is not far from where I live.

It wasn't until they had my 6 month advance payment that the problems started. Now they don't answer support tickets or email. My advice is to stay away from dbihosting.com.

Thanks again,
Rick

The whois system tell us who owns domain names, who owns IP#s.

Your IP# is owned by a company called Cogent. They tell us in the whois system that they've delegated it to a company called Colo4Jax, in Jacksonville, Florida. That may be in error, but it's unlikely; a traceroute shows it to be terminated in Jacksonville.

You can run a traceroute yourself, if you'd like, from Windows, Linux, or OS-X.

From Linux or from OS-X:
Code:
traceroute dbihosting.com

From Windows:
Code:
tracert dbihosting.com

So I'd guess that your provider is either a reseller of Colo4Jax, or owns servers located there.

Anyway, again using the whois system, I've found this contact information for dbihosting.com; it may or may not be accurate (except for the email address no one ever checks these for accuracy before issuing a domain name).

Good luck!

I would like to clear the air on this issue.

We have gone above and beyond to help Rick with his server issues. The misunderstanding lies in where he believes our responsibility ends and his begins.

We have never claimed to offer a server control panel for the plan he purchased. We have rebooted, reloaded and monitored his VPS every time he has requested such service. Rick has a slight confusion on what a web hosting control panel is capable of and what it is not.

He runs a mass-mail script that has a tendency to overload his server and max out his allocated memory. Which has led him to believe we issued him a poorly configured server. However, we do not custom configure the client's VPS. We load the VPS the same way for each OS load requested. We leave it up to the client to install whatever packages they may need. In Rick's case we even offered to install the packages he needed if he could provide us with a requirements list. Which he was unable to produce.

The package Rick purchased was an unmanaged plan, which holds our responsibility outside the realm of system configuration and maintenance. Rick found this to be unacceptable (even though we had offered to help him configure his server).

I feel the main issue here is that Rick is either mis-informed or confused as to managed vs un-managed, and what the capabilities of DirectAdmin are. We are still more than willing to help Rick resolve his issues, with-in the scope of the package he purchased.

Another issue that was troubling to me is that Rick relayed to us that the staff at DirectAdmin told him it was up to us to configure, support and maintain his DirectAdmin installation. I believe the exact quote was "BTW/ Acorrding to directAdmin support you ARE supposed to offer support for DA and you should have fixed my email/webalizer problem."

If Rick purchased the DirectAdmin license from DirectAdmin, then he should get support from DirectAdmin. If you supplied him with DirectAdmin, whether or not he pays extra for it, and if that license is what DirectAdmin calls an Internal License, then DirectAdmin is not resonsible for support.

I don't know you, and my previous response was based entirely on posts made by the original poster. The information I posted was all public information (or I couldn't have obtained it) and was posted only because he said he couldn't find anyone to contact.

Note that I'm not an employee of JBMC, the company that publishes DirectAdmin. I'm simply a lowly forum admin.

I've closed this thread. I can delete it; please write me privately at the email address below if you feel I should.
