Webmail which includes support for Kolab2
http://www.horde.org
Email, Calendar, AddressBook, Notes, etc.

What do you think?

The two major changes would be going to Cyrus and Postfix, but the Kolab2 dev team provides an already integrated package, so it shouldn't be too hard to manage for the DA crew.

Sounds good to me Postfix is good. To have evrything in a nice package certainly seems welcome. I thought there was not going to be DA 2?

No one ever said there wouldn't be a DA2. It's just that DA pointed out they didn't say there would be.

If completely changing the email system wouldn't require a completely new version number I can't see what would.

Personally I'd vote strongly against changing from exim, which political arguments aside, is powerful and fast, and the easiest to confiure email system there is.

(In my opinion postfix is needlessly encumbered by it's design decision to make so compatible with sendmail.)

DA would have to have major changes to it's data files to make it compatible.

Removing webmail programs? Perish the thought; you've got clients that like the ones you've got.

Add another, such as Horde? Absolutely.

Switching to an IMAP program capable of handling Maildir? Switching to Maildir? Absolutely, though that alone would probably be worth of a Version 2. But switching away (unnecessarily, I might add) from a working exim we understand? Perish the thought.

;)

(My guess is your interest in Kolab comes from an interest in offering a groupware and/or an exchange type of solution. If so, may I respectfully suggest that webserving and groupware serving are really two separate businesses.)

For me too, the switch from Exim to Postfix is not the thing I would be most happy about, but the fact that everything comes in a nice package makes for it imho.

True, the groupware functionnalities are not very common in the hosting business, but if customers don't want to use it, they don't need to.
This would just be a plus for small businesses more in needed of an ASP solution.

This would be quite a change for the DA crew, that's why I'm trying to gather opinions ;).

Well, I'm going to stick with my opinion. A general purpose shared hosting server is not at all similar in configuration to an asp server. If I couldn't keep using exim I'd be extremely unhappy.

A major change of an entire subsystem (especially for no functional reason, as replacing exim with postfix has no functional advantages) is a reason to look again at all choices.

But that's only my opinion. Do you know of any other vendor that completely changed a major subsystem and all its components?

If DA changes major programs that make up how their server runs they'd find themselves losing customers; we have a way of choosing the control panels we use based on what they includes.

Well if you're collection opinions ;) ....

Mine is "If it ain't broke don't fix it"

Not the most technical of opinions I know, but one born from a few years of running businesses.

have to agree that I think exim is nice and reliable, postfix is more cumbersome and would require major changes to the way DA works. Also if there is going to be a DA v2 then removing what exists as in squirrelmail and the webmail would annoy users because that is what they used to, sure add a 3rd option in hordemail but keep whats there.

I would just be happy with courier or cyrus imap, tight clam integration and the option for horder(especially horde 3). The fact of the matter is that we do not even need DA to deal with webmail at all. What should be done is to simply be able to configure the cp to tell it what it wants to use for webmail. I don't know about you, but I do not want to support 3 different webmail programs.

The "define your link to a webmail" option would be great. This could even work for resellers wanting to use their own system.

It should be the same for the webmail button, Help button, Support Center link, etc.

Honestly if you ask me, this should be at the top of the list for DA to do. It would be very annoying to have to edit skins every month.

I suppose the only way this can be done is if the actaul values for these items are kept outside the skin itself so that when the skin is updated, it will refer to the outside values.

A webmail system for final users and a diff one for resellers

I have a doubt, I am starting to sell reseller accounts. However I want to keep an edge and have a better webmail for my customers.

The solution would be:

My customers:
** NUTSMAIL customized Squirrelmail
+ Horde 3/IMP4 + a groupware solution

My resellers and theirs customers:
** Default "boring" quirrelmail +
+ Horde 2/IMP3

How would you implement this?
Is there a way to automate the generation of a custom httpd.conf file
for resellers?

You are asking for a lot of trouble if you want to run 2 versions of Horde.

I currently have 2 versions of Horde running on my web server. :)

Not too much problem... just need to figure out how to change the default database, so you can have each installation in an individual database :)

Might get flamed for this but I wouldnt like to think DA2 is been worked on right now, there is still much incomplete features in DA1 to finish off.

I have used postfix before, and I had good sucess with it.

With that said, it really doesn't matter to me whether DA uses Exim or Postfix.

What really needs to be changed is the IMAP server. WU-IMAP is awful, and we need a change. I suggest courier, it has the best support and it works extremely well with large imap accounts.
