Ok I am in the process of moving some accounts to a new server, luckily for me its only half a dozen accounts.

I have got backups ran by the built in backup function and I also have the old server still online. Is there a way to import the actual directadmin account (traffic limits etc. and login name/password) or do I need to make the account on the new server and then restore the backed up date?

I've moved several (200+) accounts like this...

- Make backup on old server
- Restore backup on new server
- Update DNS

There are some issues with what all gets backed up but if they are standard accounts everything should go well, including all limits and current usage information.

Make sure your customers are aware of the fact that thier accounts are being moved and keep your old server up for at least 96 hours after the DNS has been changed (this allows for DNS propagation accross the Internet to be completed and limits downtime of the site).

Note that if there are databases you should point localhost on the old domains to the new server and on the new server allow the IP of the old server to connect to the database, doing this will allow the old server to update data on the new server and will limit dataloss.

One more note: Sometimes the password of the FTP user needs to be reset when you do it this way.

Abit vague if I sound rude I am sorry but clearly I am stuck on the restoring backup data part, when you restored how did you restore the account information?

I think I have found a dir here?

/usr/local/directadmin/data/users

That has a dir for each user full of files with limits etc. But then comes the question about packages because normally you have to make a package then assign that package to the user so I assume I need to restore the packages from previous server as well somehow. Am I on the right track here?

Here's a tip change the TTL of your nameserver records to 30 min, then you don't have to wait long for DNS to work:)

P.S. Don't forget to change it back!

I use 600 (10 mins) TTL anyway, dont see the need for such a large TTL.

Go to the reseller panel on your old server...
Go to manage user backups
make backup or user accounts you wish to move
....you can FTP it directly to the new server (make sure that the reseller has the directory /user_backups, you can have DA create the directory by making a backup of a user)...

Go to the reseller panel on your new server
Go to manage user backups
At the bottom you should restore the users (don't forget to select the shared IP of the server)

Make sure that the DNS is pointing to the right server (check your WHOIS to see which DNS servers the domain is using, you might have to update the domain with new DNS servers)

Hope it's clear now, if you still have problems PM me login details and a list of accounts and I'll do the backup / restore for you and all you have to do is the DNS.
