OK so I didn't really know how to title this thread.

Point is, I have a domain registered which was previously pointed to an external IP (ie. 212.212.212.212). Now I changed the IP at all fields in the DNS to our IP (ie. 202.202.202.202), but now www.domain.com works, and domain.com doesn't, and domain2.com works, and www.domain2.com doesn't.

This is determined by the client it seems, as my colleague here can't open www.domain.com while I can.

Can someone give me the theory on this?

And how long does it take to work properly?

It can take up to 48-96 hours to propogate worldwide.

Use external sites to check if its updated. I recommend www.network-tools.com

Also you can check /var/log/messages to make sure that named had no errors when reloading the zone file. Sometimes if there are errors it wont update properly.

I thought it only took that long when changing DNS servers. THat's not the case right now, only the IP address is altered..

The way I think it is;
when domain.com is requested, the client checks what nameservers are used by the ISP, after which he'll be redirected to the right DNS zone, where it can find the correct IP address. So that would mean, even if the DNS zone is altered, the IP would have to update immediately.

I'd like to learn why this isn't right :)

Nope.

It all depends on your TTL. If you'd used real information you could have had help by now.
