Do you think that the forum is messy?

Okay, I am really tired of the messiness here. I really think that with a bit of effort organizing the forums, and removing the redundant forums, the DirectAdmin forum could be much more helpful than it is now!

I am not trying to start a war, but I would love to have you to voice your opinion (if you agree with me or disagree), so that I can email this link to the Company and at least have them to read and do something about it.

A well-organized forum helps everybody to get help and help each other when needed, and would definitely have a positive impact on every aspect concerning DirectAdmin. Be it sales, or the community.

I don't think they have noticed the problems because I haven't been seeing them for quite a long time (but it could just be me).

I apologize if I am being paranoid here, I just couldn't stand it.

Agreed

I agreed with you. I may piss off some people by saying this but I don't think a forum for end users is necessary. Resellers access to this forum is fine but they should raise their questions to their respective hosting providers.

I have a suggestion for this forum users is that if you post a question in here and you find the answer to your own question please post the answer here.

Maybe another way to get this forum organized is by using the search button. A lot of questions are already answered millions of times.

Most of the answers I answer are found by just hitting search or in another way type it in to google.

Way to lazy to just enter a question here and then hope someone will do the searching for you :p

only two replies? doesn't seem like many people agree with me then.

Are you talking about limiting access to the forums such as Modernbill did or the specific user level forum?

In my opinion, this thread and other threads like it are not very constructive criticism. To yield best results, lets see some ideas, such as a diagram of a new forum layout. Then if DA likes it they can implement, otherwise it would appear that they are satisfied with the current layout for the time being.
Personally, I have had no trouble with it.

actually this is my idea...

Start this thread, see if anyone agree with me. Contact DA via email, have them look at this thread, as well as proposing a new forum layout.

It's really useless to propose anything here since they don't check here at all nowadays.

I don't think they will respond to your email with these questions.

In earlier stages I've mailed them sometimes about these things and it's not getting responded or just a message : "We look into it"

And never hear anything about it again ;) So probaly they don't like people raising these issues to them as they probaly think it's OK how they do it now.

Bringing this thread back from the dead just to bring up the suggestion that a Debian Beta Testing Forum might be convenient as well as other Beta forums for other Operating Systems which are currently in Beta Status.

If vBulletin supports subforums such as invision and the new phpBB (which might never arrive :p ), may I suggest a structure such as

- - Operating Systems
- - - - Stable
- - - - - - FreeBSD 4.x
- - - - - - CentOS 3.x
- - - - - - RedHat 9.x
- - - - Beta
- - - - - - Debian 3.x
- - - - - - CentOS 4.x

Just some ideas.

Well there is a lot of forums that conflict with each other and I think it can be reduced, there is operating system support which isnt really needed at all, stuff for that can either go in specific forum such as freebsd 4.x or just in general. FreeBSD 5.x status needs to be defined and if stable the forum moved to stable.

As someone lurking, reading and learning about DA before I buy it and start using it I would have to say these forums could use a little work.

I do not think restricting it to resellers only is a good idea because many people may use the CP for their own server and net resell hosting.

I like the idea about grouping things better such as the suggestion by jmstacey and the comment by Chrysalis is very much correct.

There are a lot of posts in the how-to section that are a mile long and after reading them serve to confuse more than anything else.

Same thing with third part SW, I know DA can not do support for TPS but the several page posts about how to install something just really get confusing and after reading them I at least do not really know where to start. It is hard to get the actual steps to do an install with so many conflicting or different posts.

The Official DirectAdmin Announcements are should be that and only that. I just read the Debian one (well a couple posts anyway) and it is a discussion thread not an announcement. Plus there is only one thread?

The version updates forum is good but I dare say that it seems it should contain official update notices with update instructions, or links to them. Maybe change the name of the forum to make it clear DA does not posts there.

I good FAQ in the forum would be nice to have. You could include links to the support site to instructions on the most asked about items.

Does this version or VB in general not have feature that when you click on a thread you have read before but contains new posts that it takes you to the first post you have not read? Man that would be nice!

I say make jmstacey a mod, I see more posts by him than anyone else :)

Thats all off the top of my head.

I think the forum is very useful as is!

Very useful yes, but being a "neat phreak" you might say, always want to have something organized and as efficient as possible :p

Damnskippy pretty much spot on, I agree it shouldnt be resellers only, it will put people of buying a licence if they cannot view the forum.

What about a DirectAdmin wiki? I've become a hard core wiki fan in the past couple of years, using them for multiple purposes. I'm not sure a wiki should be a complete replacement for these forums, but certainly all of the howto's could be moved there, and a wiki could help handle a lot of the simpler and often repeated help requests.
The How To's could be cleaned up and reorganized for readibility, a FAQ could be much more easily written and kept up to date, a "Suggestions List" could be easily compiled, and whatever else anyone came up with could be done. If no one else wishes to put one up, I could do so, and either way would certainly be glad to help work on one.

Well, the wiki is a nice idea, but it shouldn't replace this forum.
A better way perhaps is to try to force users to use the search button. I usually search before I post, which is also the reason I don't have thousands of posts, and searching saves me time :).

Furthermore it might be an idea to make sure end users don't have access to certain admin/reseller forums to make it easier for them, and it should be clear that end users should first contact their resellers and resellers should contact their admins before all starting to post here.

Splitting categories up into different distro's is fine with me, although I would also like to still have access to all those forums. Although I have to admit I usally hit the 'new posts' button and open some links in tabs (firefox) that interest me.

But it would be a nice idea to change that common questions thing DA has to a wiki so we can add howto's and information to common problems without having to ask DA to add it.
Furthermore it should be more clear that users should search before posting.

I'd even be willing to setup a user built wiki for DirectAdmin if anybody would be interested. However, it would be more beneficial to DirectAdmin and future customers to have it on their website.

While I don't have the rights necessary to add or delete sections, I can certainly merge and reorganize the HowTos (for example).

But I'm loathe to do so, as most of us have figured out how and where to look by now.

Nor do I have the time to make sure each HowTo is updated according to the posts that follow it.

One thing I will do as time permits is move my own HowTos to my own site, and leave only links here on the DA forums.

I don't expect to spend much time on a wiki, though I won't guarantee anything; I already spend an average of two hours per day on these forums and frankly that's enough for me.

True, the forums were reoganized as they are currently just after I joined just over a year ago and I have gotten used to know where to look.
