Does DirectAdmin come with ftp, apache, phpmyadmin, mysql and php?

Hello,
This week I kind of screwed up. I got an unmanaged dedi with directadmin, thought it didn't have the above features and kind of messed around with my yum.conf, so now as I wait for a reinstall I'm not exactly sure what I have, but time is passing so I thought I'd ask.

When you get a directadmin in a dedi, do you have to create an ftp user in DA to gain access from filezilla to the server root? Mine isn't working right now, and it's either because I fiddled around with the server's files, or because DA doesn't come with ftp.

If DA doesn't come with, for example, ftp, how would you install it?

Same question goes for the other basic features.

Directadmin does not allow this by default.

A little bit old information, but still:

Hello,

They way that guide is worded, it seems as if someone is providing the service of installing directadmin AND the other features. By this do you mean the DirectAdmin control panel does indeed come with all these other features added?

And DirectAdmin doesn't allow the creation of ftp users, you mean? Can you think of any reason why my root and password that worked for SSH wasn't working in FTP? I thought it was because ftp wasn't installed and that was one of the reasons among others why I took to attempting to install everything from the command line.

There, in yum.conf, I found lines that excluded the above mentioned services, so I probably messed with the server by installing them through yum and eliminating that line. But if you could tell me anything that occurs to you as to why I was failing to access via ftp while ssh was working, that'll make this new installation of mine a much happier ride, thanks.

Yes, I do. More of that I'm sure that it is so.

And DirectAdmin doesn't allow the creation of ftp users, you mean?

No, of course not. Directadmin allows to create FTP users, but they will not have root access.

Can you think of any reason why my root and password that worked for SSH wasn't working in FTP?

ProFTPd has its own password file(-s), and PAM module is disabled by default. SSH uses PAM authorization, and ProFTPd does not use it.

P.S. If you want I can fix the things on your server, but you should pay my work.

Sorry buddy, i'm too poor atm to pay for support :)

I'm getting a new reinstall today, with DA. If you or anyone could tell me how to deal with what the hosting said:

''when we install DA a base level setup is provided, you will have to edit the DA setup and add the functions you want to use,''

Anyone got any guide lying around on how to edit the DA setup and add the functions?

Ofc if it turns out to be too hard, I guess I'll have to pay for support, but i'm figuring there's gotta be an easier way where I can also learn and become self subsistent

Sorry, but these words

''when we install DA a base level setup is provided, you will have to edit the DA setup and add the functions you want to use,''

are too ambiguous. And has nothing specific in them, anyway I would understand them and reword it as following:

You've got Directadmin with a default set of running software, which come with their default settings as it is provided by directadmin custombuild script. If for any reason you are not satisfy with what you've got, and want something special, then and only then you will have to edit the DA setup and add the functions you want to use.

Note, the defaults are quite good for small and medium projects. At least they are very good for a start-up. So use them, and later you might understand how good (or bad) they are for you, and if you need more, you'll know what exactly it will be.

And finally, accessing a server as root via FTP is a very bad, bad idea, as you risk to be hacked, as FTP passwords are transfered in plain format.

So you think if I want to get an ftp access going I will have to create a user from within DA, or install something like a version of ftp in the command line?

@jiri2:

It appears you know enough about running a DirectAdmin-based VPS to create a very insecure server; one which will be a problem for you, your users, and depending on what the hackers do with it, dangerous to other servers and clients on the 'net.

Why do you want ftp? To upload a website? If so, create a reseller and a user, and upload to that user.

Some people host a website at the user level of the DirectAdmin admin login, but that's a bad idea, because you should never expose your admin password (people who log into DirectAdmin through the admin password can do many things you normally couldn't do without being root.

And you should, before doing anything else, create a secure login for admin to DirectAdmin.

Some of us don't even allow ftp access to our users because we don't want server passwords available in the clear.

What your provider is telling you is that their installation of DirectAdmin is simply a base install of the system; that hardening it and setting it up is entirely up to you. You can find lots more information by using Google to search the DirectAdmin site and Forums (site:www.directadmin.com) and the knowledgebase (site:help.directadmin.com), and the various site-helper sites (site:www.site-helper.com, site:reseller.site-helper.com, and site:admin.site-helper.com). Or you can hire someone to manage your server for you, or you can rent a managed DirectAdmin dedicated or Virtual private server.
