Hi, Ive been using directadmin for about 2 years now on 7 different servers and all of them seem to have the same problem.

Every once and a while I get a client calling complaining that when he tries to get his email he gets a message saying host unknown. He'll keep hitting the retrieve button and randomly, sometimes it will work and sometimes the message will come up. This phenomena happens with several different clients all located on different servers (it even happens to me). Furthermore, it happens quite often that clients call me telling me that they can hit a website on one of my servers yet I can.

Can anyone explain this.

I use directadmin right out of the box on fedora core 4 on dell poweredge servers runing on loads bellow 1.00.

Please help, this is getting anoying.

The fact that you can hit a site, yet someone else can't is usually not a problem with you're server, but either with the other person's ISP's DSN cache or a router along the way.

Remember that person A may take one route to the server, while person B may take a totallydifferent route...A may get there, while B may run into a roadblock on the info highway.

When you run into users that say they can't reach a site, have them do a tracert to the domain name and send you the results..bet it's not even reaching the server.

The problem could also be an artifact of using only one DNS server; the one running your sites.

If you only have one DNS server it's possible to get a host unknown error because the DNS server is restarting (for example whenever DNS is added or changed or a site is added or deleted.

Do you have a separate slave server?

i do have an extra server lying around that i could set up as a dns server but i dont want to be adding entries manually everytime something is done in directadmin.

I also noticed that the new direct admin has some sort of server clustering for dns but I dont understand it exactly. Could that be a better solution?

What should I do?
