I originally purchased my domain elsewhere then moved it to DirectAdmin... I just received a bill in the mail from my original domain purchasee who tells me that my domain name is about to expire and they are biling me. Do I continue paying them or by transferring the domain here do I pay you?

Hi John,

Generally you can register your domain with any registrar you wish so long as your DNS point to the correct place.

If it is ok how it is set up now and points to the right place and your site works then it is your choice if you re-register at the same registrar or transfer to another registrar. Be aware that you cannot transfer a domain within approx 10 days of renewal (from memory)

If your current registrars prices are competitive (under $10 or thereabouts per year) - and you're happy with them - then I wouldn't bother with transferring somewhere else.

EDIT: If you're unsure you could always check with your web host :)

I just wanted to add to John...

John,

You may be confused. You pay annually for a domain registration at a registrar. That's who's billing you now.

You may have moved your domain to a server to be hosted, but it has to be registered every year.

If you're satisfied with the price and the service (or lack of service) you've gotten, then by all means pay the bill.

Or you'r domain will become unavailable on the 'net.

If not, then find another registrar and transfer your domain name.

If you do neither, then you'll lose your domain name and someone else could register it.

Hope your concerns have been resolved by now. Although you didn't state the actual name, the good news is that domain DELMARVADJ.COM is currently fully paid. No additional REGISTRAR payment is required for that domain until 2006-12-09.

For the record, even after a domain name has been TRANSFERRED to a new REGISTRAR, many LOSING REGISTRARS will (continue to) send inappropriate requests for RENEWAL PAYMENTS to the ex-customer. In our opinion this commonplace business tactic is a shady trick intended to victimize gullible customers.

Bottom line, any domain renewal payment sent to your LOSING REGISTRAR will NOT be credited to your domain name and both your payment and domain may possibly become "lost"!

If you still have further questions, please rephrase your requests to be more specific. While you may know what the terms "original domain purchasee" and "moved it to DirectAdmin" and "transferring the domain here" actually mean, they're too vague for us to provide completely relevant answers.

    HTH
