domains and subdomains

I'm a novice (and that's being generous.)

I have a reseller account - josthosting - which I'm able to manage pretty well. But because I have a few people whose sites I control completely (missionaries who I do sites for as a service to them) I thought I would set up a monthly plan and put a few domains on there. Without realizing the confusion I would cause for myself I named them the same thing - josthosting! What a dope.

So is it possible to change the name of the once a month plan (non reseller) to something else?

I'm trying to set up subdomains on there but I think because I have the other josthosting it won't show the subdomains... even thought I have created the subdomain jude-3 under my monthly plan I can't get it to show up at www.josthosting.com/jude-3.

help. :-)

(hysterical laughing in the background is understandable.)

I'm not laughing but I am a bit confused because I'm not sure I understand you.

DA shouldn't let you use the same name twice.

Can you be more specific?

Thanks.

Jeff

ummmm

Well - it did. I have one at ns29a.awesomedns.com
and one at ns14b.8-95.com and they are both called josthosting.

I'm quite lost as I don't understand what you mean by "they are both called josthosting".

Just what does josthosting refer to?

Is it the username? You can have multiple domains under the same username; when you login as the username you get asked which domain you want to manage.

But you can't have two users with the same name.

josthosting.com

The following is what I got when I opened the 3 Web Hosting Plan

Plan 3 Web Hosting 895 per Month
Domain josthosting.com
Subscription $ 8.95 every 1 month(s)
Expiry 2005/04/18
Control Panel Access http://josthosting.com:2222
Control Panel Username jostho00
Domain Name Servers ns14a.8-95.com
ns14b.8-95.com

This is what I got when I opened the reseller plan.

Plan 4 Reseller Plan 895 per Month
Domain josthosting.com
Subscription $ 8.95 every 1 month(s)
Expiry 2005/03/10
Control Panel Access http://josthosting.com:2222
Control Panel Username jostho00
Domain Name Servers ns29a.awesomedns.com
ns29b.awesomedns.com

I couldn't access the 3 Web plan so I asked and was told I should access them by dns address to differentiate since I foolishly had chosen the same user name for each.

Hi,

I thought that you had a reseller account?
A reseller cannot create another reseller or am I confused?

If you use the same userid and same password while creating accounts on the same server the domains will be added to the account. If you use different passwords the first create will work (as the users does not exist) and the second create will fail.

DA uses the username and password you specify to create a *nix user account and there cannot be 2 with the same name.

"it can't be done" - but I did it!!

I do have a reseller account. It is named jostho00.

I also have a "3 Web" account also. It is named jostho00 also.

You say "DA uses the username and password you specify to create a *nix user account and there cannot be 2 with the same name. " But I'm telling you I did it!!!

I have 2 accounts.

They are both named jostho00 and the password is the same on both of them. And accessing them is a pain in the butt - I can only access them by typing in the dns name - specifically what I stated before. I'm telling you guys - I'm NOT confused here - it is what I've said it is.

So NOW do you see my problem?

I have 2 DIFFERENT accounts - both named the same - on 2 different servers. ONe is at on the ns14a.8-95.com server - the other is on the ns29a.awesomedns.com server.

And it's wreaking havoc with trying to create a subdomain on the "3 Web" account because there are 2 user accounts with the SAME NAME and SAME PASSWORD.

I guess I'll drop this and just ask Gary to close one.

I don't think this can be solved any other way. If everyone here is as startled about this as I am perhaps I'm not as stupid as I thought.

I have no idea who Gary is, but if he's the gent you bought your hosting from, then he's the gent you should be asking to begin with.

This is not Gary's forum; it's the forum for the entire DA community.

And for what it's worth, it is impossible to create two user accounts with the same name on the same posix-compliant OS service.

(Unix and linux are both posix-compliant operating systems.)

Why?

Because the username is just a pointer to a UID (user identification number). Userspace utilities won't let it happen.

If you manage to do it manually the first one will always be used, since the /etc/passwd file is read top-down, and that's where the reference between UID and usernames is kept.

thanks

I didn't mean to offend by saying I'd talk to Gary and I certainly didn't mean to imply this was his forum.

I'll be more careful in the future about what I post.

Like I said - I'm new. I thought DA was part of DixieSys and 8-95 where I am hosted. I've learned much already.

As for a nix whatever... I haven't a clue what that means.

I've gone back to where my sites are hosted, closed the account and figure I'll start over.

"...first one will always be used, since the /etc/passwd file is read top-down, and that's where the reference between UID and usernames is kept." THIS answers my question.

I didn't know how or why it is the way it is - I just know when I go to josthosting.com it always took me to the reseller account - the one I opened first. I don't know how it happened indeed - depending on which server I access I have 2 accounts with a userid of jostho00.com as shown by the previous messages.

I was trying to create a subdomain under the second josthosting.com account and see now it should never have even been allowed to be created. At this point I'm thinking I'll never use that name again.

By the way - Gary is the guy from Dixie sys - and yes he's who I should have asked in the beginning but I didn't understand that. I certainly feel like an idiot and will try to ask him all my questions in the future before coming here. Again, I thought this was part of the package with Dixies - sys . I was wrong. But I've learned and that's what matters.

I hope you didn't feel you offended me or anyone else here. When you mentioned Gary I realized you didn't have root access to your DA server, and that's what I thought you'd need to find and/or fix the problem.
