Hi,

I have a little problem with email system. When users is accessing email accoutn via webmail (squirrelmail) and after that for example at home he uses email client like (Outlook, The Bat) - messages he has already downloaded some time ago appear as new and being downloaded by email client.

It happens only after accessing email via webmail.

Any ideas how to fix this thing?

Kind Regards,

If he's using IMAP for both webmail and local downloads IMAP will always attempt to synchronize the email on all his email clients.

If he's using IMAP on the server (squirrelmail uses IMAP) and leaves read email in the inbox, his local client (POP or IMAP) will download it.

So if he reads email with squirrelmail and doesn't want to download it again with his local client, he needs to move it out of the inbox.

Hi,

Ok... but it's a little bit stupid, because the POP3 client is downloading even those messages which has beel already downladed before (for example messages from the past few days)...

Isnt there any solution to prevent such thing?

On my other box I am running postfix (but with Maildir funcionality) and if user login to squirellmail the messages are not being downloaded once again...

Kind Regards,

If the messages are still in the inbox they'll still be downloaded by the pop client.

It sounds like Outlooks inability to recognize what messages it has downloaded and which it hasn't. This problem usually only occurs when your Outlook has the "leave messages on server" option checked.

no i think it's because the version of impad we use or squirrelmail resets the messages as read once you login.

but yes it only happens when you have leave on the server.

I have several users with the same complaint and they don't even use webmail. They use a two computer setup both with Outlook and one with the "leave messages on server" setting turned on.

Google for Outlook repeat emails and you will see it is a common Outlook problem. The Outlook Usersgroup has even copped to the bug.

Though when we used to use Qmail as the mail server it wasn't a problem at all. I suspect there is something about the Exim server and its timestamps but that is only a suspicion.

Hi,

It cam be true that's some Exim or custom DA imapd issue...

I didnt have such problems with Sendmail / Postfix / Qmail on other servers I'm managing.

Kind Regards,

tested this issue on a cpanel machine with squirrelmail and 'leave messages on the server'

can't replicate the problem.

this is DA/imapd issue and it obviously can and should be fixed.

sorry, my clients complain all the time about this and how their old host's squirrelmail never did this etc...
