I am having a problem with duplicate emails being downloaded when users use both squirrelmail and Outlook. I didn't really know what to look for until I had a user tell me it always happens when he uses his blackbarry. IMAP seems to be the cause.

I found an old thread that looks like it was on the right track, but then it looked like DA was going to incorporate the patch.

The thread I found was:

http://www.directadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9424&page=3&pp=20&highlight=patch+vmpop3d

Is this a good way to go?

Most of us are switching to Dovecot/Maildir; the patch is for vm-pop3d. Has anyone had the problem with Dovecot?

Jeff

I had this problem too in the past..

it's because imap and pop use their own folders for their email.
As Jeff said, dovecot/maildir don't have that big bug.

In the meantime you could also make those users use webmail instead of squirrelmail, since that's also using pop.

Though people here really like imap over pop for some reason. ;)

That Blackbarry dosn't have the option to choose between IMAP or POP, it just queries the server to see if IMAP is supported. If it it then it will use IMAP.

They guy at Blackbarry said my UID changes when IMAP connects to it.

Also, if I switch to dovecot/maildir will updates for DA still be as easy? Will spamassassin/spamblocker

Also, while I have read lots of positives to switching, I don't know the negatives, and if it were 100% positives I would think that the peoson who setup the DA for me would have implemented that in the first place.

It's almost going to be the new standard ;)

This forum has a whole section for dovecot, and there are some install scripts as well.

I believe it is a better format, but I am concerned that updates won't work right. I'll read more, but it just seems like too big a conversion. Besides, I just got reemed on the dups and want no issues right now. I figure a major change like that is likely to have side-effects... lost emails, spam problems, server issues, something will go wrong. Also, the scripts I found all mention customapache, but when I talked with the guy that setup my DA for me said he used no customapache or custombuild.

Updates shouldn't be a problem because DirectAdmin doesn't automatically update either Dovecot or the old daemons. When it does (when CustomBuild becomes standard) DirectAdmin will know the difference.

The only issues we had when we changed systems were:

1) Email was down for a while during the update. If your users have a lot of email, that could be a while. We generally make the change in the middle of the night, server time.

2) Our users suddenly found their email usage being counted against their quotas; depending on your system configuration, if your system currently isn't checking email against quotas it may start. This could result in users not being able to receive email or do anything else until their quotas were raised.

As previously mentioned, Dovecot will be the new standard. We use it and recommend it.

Whomever set up your system didn't use customapache or custombuild because by default DA uses customapache during setup.

I see that custombuild is alot more inclusive then customapache. Since it will become the standard, should I be installing it as well? I currently have only a few domains, and plan on moving to a new server. I was thinking of installing clean on the new server with custombuild, and dovecot. I would need to upgrade the current server to dovecot to make the transition work correctly right? Is upgrading to custombuild necessary before the move as well?
