E-mail password HACK

Okay, don't misunderstand the title. I'm not trying to break into any email accounts (i dont need to, i'm an admin).

Anywho, here is the scenario. I told my buddy to try to hack into my email address (interface is squirremail but not that it matters) because he said
he can. Well, apparently he cracked the first 4 letters of my password and
my passwords aren't easy either! So now I take it he's not bluff'n...

I dont know how he's doing (he's using some sort of software possibly BF) but is there any way to block attempts of cracking email passwords (not by my buddy but others)?

Well I take it he may be using brute force and if that is the case, install a firewall; otherwise there isn't much information we can go off of. If you can give us more information on his methods, we can help you.
