Email & webalizer questions

I recently purchased a VPS and the host installed DirectAdmin. When I try to use email it says this:

Error connecting to IMAP server: localhost.

When I try to use webalizer it says this:

File does not exist

I wrote the host and they said they aren't responsible for surever management and suggested I buy a linux manual. I asked for a refund and was told they don't issue refunds so I'm stuck with this host (expensive and I purchased six months up front).

I've done the hostname nameserver thing and it still doesn't work.

Does anyone have a suggestion or possible solutions.

Thanks,
Rick

Webalizer files don't exist until at least 24 hours after someone has actually visited your site and created some activity in the log files.

The issue with your IMAP server may or may not be simple to diagnose. What exactly what do you mean by try to use email.

If your host installed DirectAdmin for you then they're supposed to maintain it for you: you should probably contact DirectAdmin and let them know who your host is. They may be able to help you, or one of us here may be able to help you after you've posted the answer to my question above.

Alternatively there are some good system administration companies and DirectAdmin support companies who post here; contact me privately if you'd like to know more about our services.

Thanks for responding. I setup my domain 3 weeks ago. I and others have gone to my site numerous times yet webalizer still says"file does not exist."
This never changes.

I've tried to login to webmail using squirelmail, roundcube, and UebiMiau.

Squirrelmail says: Error connecting to IMAP server: localhost.

roundcube says: connection to IMAP server failed.

UebiMiau says: ERROR (2): fsockopen() [function.fsockopen]: php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known (/webmail/inc/class.uebimiau_mail.php:80)

The hosting company said hostname and nameservers aren't setup correctly and told me to delete localhost.localdomain.com and to setup proper nameservers. I did as they said and nothing changed.

They also say they have nothing to do with server configuration, management and maintainence. they said "buy a Linux manual." I know nothing about Linux and I'm lost. I was told if the server goes down login through SSH and reboot it. When it goes down SSH doesn't work and after many rude insulting emails they restart it.

They also said I need a 1GB swapfile but I don't know how to do this.

thanks for any help you can give me.

Rick,

The short answer is that you need a systems administrator.

The longer answer is that it appears you've gotten a server from a bare-bones company that does nothing at all. My guess is that they took a bare server and installed DirectAdmin and have left the rest to you.

You'll probably need to hire someone to log in, check out your system, and perhaps on a regular basis to manage it for you. Several of us who post here (including me) do server maintenance; you may want to search these forums and contact me and/or others. If you want to contact me, please do it by email; my email address is at the bottom of each of my posts.

Another option, maybe workable, and maybe even less expensive, would be to get a license from DirectAdmin, but they only include managing DirectAdmin, they won't address other issues with your server (for example DNS).

You're absolutely right that you can't reboot through SSH if the server goes down. A properly managed server will almost never go down to the point that you can't shell in, but even so, a good dedicated server company will always offer prompt reboots by telephone or email request, or better still, give you your own interface to the power switch.

It appears you may have chosen the wrong hosting company; I don't know what to tell you about that.

It's easy for me/us to commiserrate with you; harder to figure out what to write in answer to your post.

Thanks Jeff,

I want to applaud John At DirectAdmin Support. Yeah John! This man fixed my webalizer and email problem quickly and without charge. He's great!

I definately chose the wrong hosting company, but having paid 6 months up front and being denied a refund, I either eat my money or learn Linux. I've
been working on this but most of it goes way over my head.

My biggest fear now is that they'll cancel my account without notice and I'll lose everything. They say they can do this.

They've been very rude and insulting in their emails to me when they bother to answer me at all.

The owner told me he had a "gut feeling not to take your business." He also said to be sure I abide by their TOS/AUC as he's quite happy to cancel my account. He was also bitching about a script I had installed.

I get the feeling that if I say anything negative about the company by name, or email them, they'll just cancel my account. He said they provided a server and that fulfills their obligation. There is no support of any kind. Period.

Thanks for your help, Jeff. If not for you I wouldn't have even known that DirectAdmin has support.
