Error Mail Queue Administration user root was not found

Mail Queue Administration

Error with queue dump: 2017-03-14 09:52:20 Exim configuration error in line 247 of /etc/exim.conf: user root was not found

and I can't ssh login to the server with root username (password is correct but get Access denied)

Disk usage is not full
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/simfs 400G 33G 368G 9% /
none 1.5G 4.0K 1.5G 1% /dev

What is the cause of the problem?

My case in /etc/passwd missing this line
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
bin:x:1:1:bin:/bin:/sbin/nologin

Lucky this is vm not sure why it missing
Now i can login root to console and see Mail Queue Administration back to normal
 
Did you find out how root user was removed from the server? Probably you were hacked? Do you see any other user with uid=0 and gid=0 in /etc/passwd ?
