I don't know how this happens but the exim threads just keep pilling up.

09:40:22 up 68 days, 5:43, 1 user, load average: 45.63, 45.19, 30.74

even after stopping exim there are still threads remaining:

service exim status
exim (pid 3130 3131 3128 3127 3124 3122 3121 3120 3117 3109 3100 3095 3092 3085 3074 3003 3004 3000 2998 2997 2976 2966 2942 2939 2934 2874 2871 2869 2868 2863 2680 2637 2635 1691 1591 26206 6723 1069 1055 6296 30985 29805 5302 3140 3969 7855 6286 19223 3965 7447 4438 1982 16247 32727 16307 3947 26285 16169 26055 10610 32505 16643 21703 4804 27453 6460 29964 19972 4850 17341 2296 25755 2729 3628) is running...

killall exim and then starting exim again brings my load back down.

anyone have any ideas please?

I noticed that Exim doesnt restart very often as it should. I'v been watching this issue on my boxes and just never see Exim restart. As far as im concerned old processes should die off and exim should be restarting but its not doing that at all.

Maybe somebody should be looking into this problem.

I have exim restarting on cron every hour as well. Nothing crazy going on in the logs either.

I just upgraded to 4.63 from 4.62 about 5 mins ago, see if that helps.

besides that I have no idea how the threads never seem to die.

well I had a LOT of these:

any ideas?

well deleting my que folder seems to have fixed it.

rm -rf /var/spool/exim/input

there were thousands and thousands of backed up emails in there.
