I just got a dedicated today - FreeBsd4.9 / DA and thought all would be easy and pre-installed. Not so, though. Seems exim isn't starting. Cannot restart / start it from DA. Nothing happens. Any idea what is wrong? Kindly note that I'm an idiot.

I tried ./exim start in SSH and got: permission denied.

Is there something I must set up in SSH? I had hoped DA would do most of the hard work.

Again, kindly note that I am mentally challenged. Please use one syllable words and big letters.

Did you su to root when logged via SSH? (Using the 'su' command and entering your root password)
then attempted to start the service from /usr/local/etc/rc.d/exim start

What errors were reported when it fails?

Hi!

thanks for answering. Yes I did. It started with an [OK], but then when I checked by /usr/local/etc/rc.d/exim status, I got an "exim dead but subsys locked". Same thing happened again and again. Status in DA remained "stopped" too.

There appears to be a problem running the 4.42 on freebsd. By the help of miracles, google and this forum, I managed to get 4.42 removed, and 4.24 up ad running.

It's ticking along nicely. Are there any security faults or other things I should be aware of in the 4.24 version? I'm given to understand DA support is working on the 4.42 package at the moment.

Cheers,

Can anyone explain the 3 or 4 emails in the midle. No completed flag and no emails arrived. What happened? Now all is ok, but can't risk losing an email here and an email there!

I'm also getting some:

2004-09-29 21:22:42 exim 4.42 daemon started: pid=14055, -q1h, listening for SMTP on port 25 (IPv4)

Even though I thought I had removed exim 4.42 and replaced it with 4.24...

I know I'm talking to myself here, but I just thought I'd let you know it turned out everything is working perfectly. It was John at DA support who were fixing my server when lesser men had gone home to sleep. Now that is service!
