Hello, im using exim 4.4 "RSS-1.3da" and im having a really hard time whitelisting someone.

Heres what i get from the reject log

2005-11-01 12:09:45 H=toronto-hse-ppp4123289.sympatico.ca (jbksvr01.patenaude-jbk.com) [70.50.252.47] F=<[email protected]> rejected RCPT <[email protected]>: Email from 70.50.252.47 blocked using dnsbl.sorbs.net

he got rejected because he is on sorbs (by no fault of his own). so what i did is put him on my whitelist.

here's what my /etc/virtual/whitelist_from looks like.

70.50.252.0/24
toronto-hse-ppp4123289.sympatico.ca
patenaude-trempe.com
jbksvr01.patenaude-jbk.com
patenaude-jbk.com

i dont understand why he is not being whitelisted when ive tried using his ip, ip range, and hostname(s).

Can someone help me please.

There are bugs in early editions of SpamBlocker, including the one delivered by default by DirectAdmin.

These bugs keep whitelisting from working properly under all circumstances :( .

You should probably update to SpamBlocker 2, here.

I'll bring this thread to DA staff attention so perhaps they'll update the version available on their website as well.

When you update be sure to make the required changes both to the new exim.conf file itself, and to the files in your /etc/virtual directory; see the README file.

If you decide to purchase the SpamBlocker Plugin, it can do the upgrade for you, as well as offer you a lot of other features.

Jeff

what kind of features can you include.

ive already installed it but im always looking for new tricks.

ps: how much does it cost. im not one to take stuff without supporting the artist.

(unless its music and the artist is forcing me to by 10 boring songs for 1 decent one)

SpamBlocker Plugin is $29.95; search for the thread for the details :) .

Hey,

I installed the new version exactly as it instructed but whitelisting is still not working.

Heres the reject log message.

Tested here with the IP# in whitelist_hosts whitelisting works properly.

Please post the first five lines of your /etc/exim.conf file.

im not sure what lines you want.

can you please specify.

thank you

That was enough to tell me you're using an old version of SpamBlocker.

Whitelisting was undependable in versions earler than 2.0.

Find my latest one here, and be sure to read and follow the README.

Jeff

Hey,

I've installed v2.0 and when i try to send emails i get this.

Email blocked by BSAL - to unblock see http://19thfloor.net/unblock.php
domains = use_rbl_domains)

I followed all the instructions in the readme file.

heres the version.

# This is version "2.0 of the SpamBlocker exim.conf file as #
# distributed by NoBaloney Internet Services for DirectAdmin based #
# servers.

It appears your exim.conf file is mangled; did you perhaps get a line ending in accidentally when you edited it?

Here's what the mangled section should look like (search your exim.conf file for BSAL):
Code:
# deny using email address in blacklist_senders
deny message = Email blocked by BSAL - to unblock see [url]http://www.example.com/[/url]
  domains = use_rbl_domains
  deny senders = +blacklist_senders
You may need to redownload, reinstall, and reconfigure.

Suggestion:

Do not cut and paste the file from our download pages; instead get it directly to your server with a wget command.

Once you've done the reinstall if you're still getting the message then the email address is in the /etc/virtual/blacklist_senders file.

Jeff

i think i got it working.

ill call my client in the morning and see if whitlisting works.

ps: is there anyway to test out how effective this stuff is?

Every blocklisted email gets listed in the /var/log/exim/rejectlog file, along with the block message.

Jeff

It seems like the new version of spamblocker is letting through more spam than the old one.

is there a setting or something that i might be forgetting?

SpamBlocker Version 2 replaces sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org with sbl.spamhaus.org.

That's generally acceptable because xbl.spamhaus.org includes information from several other blocklists we do include. The next version of SpamBlocker will add opm.blitzed.org, which is part of xbl.spamhaus.org, and which we currently don't use.

We'll get an update out shortly.

Jeff

We're currently in beta test on some of our systems; I'll keep watching to see how much the added blocklist catches and make a decision as to whether or not I want to add it.
