Fallback domain server

Hi all,

I'm currently working on a setup where my dedicated customers can add a important domain(duplicate) to my 'fallback domain server'
Let me show u my plan:

Customer servers: Directadmin, ns1/ns2.customer.nl

Now i have setup a special server where they can add a duplicate of a domain. Lets call this server:

Fallback server: Directadmin, ns1/ns2.fallback.nl

When 1 of the customer servers is down this server got to keep the important domains up and running.

How do i do this in dns?

i tried to just change the nameservers:

ns1.customer.nl / ns2.fallback.nl

but this doesnt seem to work, when i delete the user on the customer server the fallback server doesnt take it over.

am i missing something here?
