Files install in root directory, not in /public_html/

Dear all,

I have recently installed the SMF forum. So far so good, it works.
When I try to add mods, things go wrong.
I am new in VPS servers.

My forum is in:

/home/user12345/domains/mydomain.nl/public_html/forum

But when I install updates to the forum, it installs all the way in the /user12345 directory
So files do not go to /forum, but all the way in the /user12345 directory.

I also can see several other (log) files from a different php program om my site, automatically writing in this site root, while it should go in the /public_html/ directory.

Hopefully I am clear enough for you to explain the problem.
Something is wrong with my directory settings. I am not an expert.

If you are using the forum script to do this then you have some settings wrong for your forum. What settings need to be changed? We cannot possibly know at this point. If you told us more details perhaps somebody familiar with that forum could answer.
 
As I wrote, it is not only the forum.

When software installs files it does not go into /public_html

I think, when a program wants to install in ./ it is going to the ultimate root...
 
Whatever the software its the software telling it where to install and so its the software settings you have to change.

This does not help... Of course I tell where to install. Even the full path, however this fails!

Have you considered that what you are entering is not correct and you need to enter something else? Never mind. I know what you are going to say.

Without knowing the software and all the install options its impossible for us to hold your hand through the install process. You should probably ask the software writers what the problem could be or ask their forum.

I asked the softwaremakers. SMF Forum, Tinyportal. They tried to help me, but could not...
That is why I am here now, to get some help...

I am sure there is a config.php or configure.php that has a wrong path in it then. You should check your forum directory and see if you have any file like that probably in an /include or /includes folder. More than likely there is a line in it pointing to the wrong folder. I personally never used smf before though.
 
This forum is to help people with DirectAdmin related problems. Your problem is not DirectAdmin related. But I did try to help you anyway and tell you where to look. However you do not believe me so I don't know what else to do.

Have tried asking your hosting company?

Funny thing is: it is pointing at the right folder:

/home/user12345/domains/mydomain.nl/public_html/forum or to other folders in /forum.

But my problem is not forum related. When any program writes something it goes beyond the /public-html.
So might that be a setting in Directadmin or on my VPS?

So which is it?
 
When my site is running and the php points at a directory with ./ it writes files to /home/user12345/

As it should since that is your home directory.

So if you want it to go to your forum directory then you need ./domains/mydomain.nl/public_html/forum
