Free subdomain sign ups...

I was wondering if there is a way to offer free subdomain by signing up through a page.

I think I read about a script, but I'm php-illiterate.

If there is a 3rd party program, I might be able to figure it out how to install it.

I have a very basic script that allows setup of domains and user accounts using php, however it does not check 1st to see if the domain has been used or not.
