Get faster server

Hi everyone,
i want to create a member area, where people can download videos over 500MB. Now i have a problem with my server speed. I thought i can offer a downloading speed of more than 500kb, but the speed right now is less than 50kb. And i thought i'm renting a very fast server. I got the server from calpop.com a Dual Quad xeon server E5410 CPUs.
Now i want to ask you experts, do i need a special server configuration that my members can download with 500kb or i need some other strong server?
And will it help or can i add some other server using the multi server setup?

Well your server can be as powerful as it gets, but for users to download at faster rates, you're going to need access to more bandwidth. To get the speeds you're wanting, you'll have to upgrade to the plan that lets you burst to 100mbps (or get a dedicated 100mbps, but that's extremely expensive at your host). But realize that you'll get hit with fees from bandwidth-overage possibly. I would personally check out other companies for different options.

What speed does your server use to connect to CalPop's network?

Do you have access to MRTG on their network? If not, install it on your server so you can figure out your highest outbound bandwidth.

network throughput and IO wait will be your limiting factors here... choose a faster IO scheduler (deadline), and a decent processor... you won't need anything crazy.

Depending on the number of concurrent downloads you expect, you may want to consider a RAID solution to help mitigate the IO delays.
