Has anyone created a good set of instructions on how to change over from WU-IMAP to Courier IMAP?

I have a bunch of servers that I want to switch over to DirectAdmin, but I just cannot see myself moving to WU-IMAP. It is horribly slow with large IMAP accounts, which I have *a lot* of.

John, does Direct Admin have any plans on adding support for Courier, or completely switching to Courier?

I will pay extra for this, and I see there are a many other people on here that really want this, and might even pay for it.

This has been discussed beofre, but nothing has come of it as far as I know.

In my opinion, the only way I see this happening is if the current imap software begins to cause problems and the easiest solution was for DirectAdmin to switch to a new one.
Otherwise, I'm afraid DirectAdmin would need a more OO design to allow pick and choosing of compatible software.

WU-IMAP will definitely be a problem for those with very large imap accounts using squirrelmail. It is well documented. Out of 6 sysadmins I asked about WU-IMAP, their reply was all the same "garbage" :) Now I don't know about that, but I have experienced the problems with large imap accounts and WU-IMAP.

DA uses mbox rather than Maildir.

Does Courier work with mbox files?

Jeff

I'm not sure. I am under the impression that Cpanel uses courier and uses the mbox format. Wouldn't it be preferred to use Maildir over Mbox anyway? I know this would make the conversion more difficult, but it certainly must be possible.

I'd prefer Maildir.

The conversion is extremely complex.

I don't know if it's possible or not.

Jeff

I'm sure most would agree about preferring Maildir support. According to someone on this board and a couple of admins I spoke to it is possible. But it is all talk as far as I'm concerned. I offered to pay a couple of people to do this, but have never heard back from them.

I think the only folk who could do Maildir support would have to be DA staff.

Jeff

I'd like to cast my vote for Courier and Maildir as well. That's the one thing I miss when I moved to DA. My previous servers didn't have a control panel but I had Exim/Courier with Maildir. Loved it. Courier (with th exception of debugging and dealing with Mr. Sam) is a wonderful product and easy to work with.

Personally?

Because I like Courier better. Can't remember the exact reasons now but when I was looking to mvoe to IMAP, I reviewed all the packages I could find and Courier came out on top. It's a very stable package.

Hey I'm up for anything that works well. UW-Imap does not work well with large imap accounts and squirrelmail.

The problem is still that it's not easy to convert from mbox to Maildir on a working server.

If you can find a tutorial, let me know; I'll be happy to try.

:)

Jeff

Actually, the chapter I mentioned in a previous post gives you some tips in the part called "Migration from Berkeley (Unix) Mailbox Format to Cyrus".

If you've got time to convert "tips" to a tutorial, go for it; unfortunately I don't :( .

Jeff

Didn't try any yet, because I wouldn't like to run risks at my production box, but if you type in Google "mbox to maildir conversion", there are quiet a few matches with solutions for that!

When I followed some of those links some time ago (I think this idea has been around over a year now) I came away with my head swimming.

Olivier, I've got extra systems set up on static IP#s, and can provision one with DA for your experimentation easily enough; let me know if you'd like complete access to a server to try :) .
