Hi sorry for the broad title :)

I am really new to server management, actually I have zero knowledge about server management :)

As the title says I have gottan me a dedicated server with DirectAdmin. What do you advice me to do now :) i mean regarding the security?

I am selfmanaging the server, cause otherwise it was too expensive... I know :o

What changes or addons do I need to make the server more secure, cause now it is default, is it a major risk, to keep it like that?

What should I use to monitor the server?

And all other things you think a newbie need to know :D

I thank you very much for your help.

By the way I have already a small? problem I hope you will help me with, but I dont know if it is here I have to post it?

its about my server that "frozes" or just wont respond at CET time hour 04.00 its around this time every day, after a half hour its normal again, but then it happens the next day again

What information do you need from me to solve this problem? and what information should I mask, because of the security :)

Thanks again for your help...

Best regards...

If your provider had delivered a good setup you don't have to do anything. Is it is a basic setup and a shared platform, switch off some PHP-functions like exec, system_exec, dl, etc. Set 'allow_url_fopen' off. Also chmod 'wget', 'telnet' etc to 700 (root only).

Cacti. But please; monitor extern from outsite your server. If you wish, i can enable snmp and gove you a free account on my shared Cacti server located in Amsterdam (EU) to monitor traffic, diskspace, processes, load, etc.

Yust take some free afternoon and read this forum.

We're in the midst of creating a curriculum and self-paced class for learning both server administration and DirectAdmin administration. This is a very ambitious project. If it ever gets finished we'll probably offer it in some way.

Now that I'm back from vacation, we should move quickly on the Wiki, as well.
