Okay, i think everybody on this forum is involved in this topic..
Everybody will at some point come to the point of restoring backups (hdd crash, reinstall's). There are many questions but less answers..

- Admin backups are great global backups, but what if you got them and you have to put them back.. hell!!!!

- User backups are great specific backups, but where are the configs..
It isnt an package to put back and run asap...

How do you handle these 2 procedures?
How do you restore them? tips? tricks? advise?
How far is DA development with perfecting this issue?

We have at least one configured server available, online, at the datacenter, ready to go. Barring that, if you can't afford that, I'd say have a procedure for rebuilding a server with an OS, step-by-step, and be prepared to run it in a hurry.

Years ago we used the sysbk system backup and did everything manually. That took quite a bit of time.

Nowe we simply restore the admin level reseller backup on a newly installed OS/DirectAdmin system.

What specific issue? If you're rebuilding on the same machine with the same IP#s all you have to do is rebuild the OS, reinstall DirectAdmin, and then restore the admin level reseller backups.

If you want to save time then you might want to have a server ready, with DirectAdmin installed but not running (in other words, no license). Then when you're ready to go plug in the machine, change the IP#s to the ones the original machine worked on, and start DirectAdmin, before restoring the admin level reseller backups.

Or you can find a system-specific bare-metal backup solution for the OS Distribution you use, and use it to create a bare-metal backup. Then when you need to, simply run your bare-metal restore, and then delete all the users/resellers, and restore them from an admin level reseller backup.

DirectAdmin isn't a backup solution, and because it works across multiple OS distributions, it's doubtful that it will ever include a bare-metal backup solution.

i was recently trying mondo and i think its looks good. I was able to backup and restore a server CentOS 4.x using their technique. I am still testing and haven't implemented that on a server running DA, which should definitely work.

I hope there are other users who might have comments to add to Mondo Rescue.
