Hello all!

I just got a dedicated server and a DirectAdmin license yesterday. I went with FreeBSD 5.4 because I have read it is a rather solid combination.

I am a *nix beginner with some hands on using Debian & SuSe at home (very little since most of my stuff is for windows).

I have been plugging away on a shared vhost that I got from 1&1's 3yr promotion for about a year. I think it's FC but has obvious limitations compared to the two below.

I have had around 3 months experience with VPS (FC2+Virtuozzo+Plesk 7.54) up until it -vanished- on Dec 28th -- the provider said it was a billing issue although I have pre-paid it for a year. The VPS has once again been delivered to me, tonight.

Since I got the dedicated server yesterday I have been working with it via SSH, learning some and just earlier today got the DA back in order after I caused some problems by updating some of the packages.

..I had an libperl.so not found problem (keeping httpd from starting) which none of the (customapache, etc) suggestions I could find here helped. I ended up using the DirectAdmin setup.sh which got me back to where I was to start with I think. Whew!

Anyhow, I knew it was only a matter of time before I got the VPS back so I set the dedicated I bought yesterday with server1.mydomain.com as a hostname. The VPS I had set to server2.mydomain.com as it's hostname.

What I am wondering is what would be a sensable thing to do? .. to somehow make the two sort of complement one another?

The multiple servers stuff in DA is apparently for linking two DA equipped servers.. ?

I was thinking maybe using the VPS (5GB storage) for backup DNS/e-mail or something. I really have more hosting possibilities that I know what do do with!

I got one of those accounts as well (after all the price [free] was right :D ).

I'd be shocked if the company calling itself the largest hosting company in the world used FC, which a lot of people claim to be the least stable of all linux platforms, and which even the creators say shouldn't be used in a commercial server environment.

What leads you to believe they use FC?

Only for slave DNS.

DNS is obviously a natural, since it's built in. If you use it for backup MX you'll need to do a lot on your own; you could start by searching these forums. Warning, though; if you do you'll see why we believe backup MX isn't trivial, and we don't recommend it.

Get out there and sell some reseller accounts :) .

Well I looked more closely via shell and I think you're correct. My assumption I think was overly biased with my recent reading and re-reading of their root server ads.

Hmm. Perhaps I will try making a backup mail server on the VPS and another nameserver. I have used 1&1 for a backup mail server in the past. Seemed to work pretty well. I may work on it later once I decide on the dedicated or not. Right now I need to check with support and find out why my max http/ftp downloading from the server peak around 250KBs. I expected more from it.

I kind of hoped my VPS provider would have refunded the credit they gave me easily, swiftly. I waited a few days once I asked and never heard back so decided to make it easy for them and just re-use the credit they gave me to re-purchase the VPS.

The only good thing about it is that I got roughly 3 months of use for free since they credited me for the whole pre-paid year when it -vanished- on Dec. 28th.

I'd like to sell some space but I'm not really sure it would go well since I have no fancy hosting business kind of site.
