Help with sftp and ftp-tls

I'm trying to secure my ftp. I understand that sftp via ssh is preferred. I am able to sftp to my server with my server login, but can't get to my user files from there, and of course I can't sftp in with my DA user credentials. Am I correct here?

Is it just as good to use ftp with tls? If so, what config file to I change to enforce this for all? (I am all the users on the server).

sftp is a secure protocol and it has many differences compared to ftps, you may want to read http://forum.directadmin.com/showthread.php?t=30607, if you'd like to setup sftp for your current DA users.

Thanks for the response. That is exactly what I'm looking for. The only problem is I'm afraid it my break my automated directadmin ftp backups. They are set up in the reseller panel and there is no option for sftp, only port number.

If I make the changes in the post you referred to, will the ftp backup still work?

Yes, FTP backups to a remote FTP would still work, because it is nothing related to FTP on your server (ncftp/curl are used for remote backups, more info: http://help.directadmin.com/item.php?id=111).

If you using FTP from remote servers to backup your data to a Directadmin powered server, them you should update your backup scripts to support SFTP (http://help.directadmin.com/?query=ncftp). We transfer backups via SFTP and rsync over SSH, and there is no issue with that.

And it worked great!

However a couple of days later, sftp did not work until I restarted proftpd.

Did I miss some configuration change?

The latest version of ProFTPd has a bug which affects SFTP.
