How do I disable reverse lookups serverwide?

HostNameLookups is OFF, but I still see hostnames in logs etc. even if I add it as a custom httpd directive per host!

Am I missing something....

The reason that I want them off, is I'm seeing a lot of dodgy script scans but the logs just say "lunar.server", "jupitor.server", etc, so can't get the IP!

Perhaps. Where is HostNameLookups set to off? Apche logs are parsed and settings applied from general to specific, if there's an off setting at the httpd.conf level (or an include thereof), but an on setting in a more specific location (user-specific httpd.conf, directory container, whatever), on will be honored.

We (Martynas and me) thought it was because I'm using a .htaccess with
"deny from hostnames.com"
but even when removed, hostnames still get logged.

So, to fix it I had to remove all my "deny from" directives (even the deny from ip lines) to log just IPs! The hell?
