After just two weeks with a new dedicated server the host has built me a brand new box and now I must transfer everything, including DirectAdmin to the new server.
The systems are both CentOS and I have a tar.gz of the old server but I am not sure if I start from root or admin or where to open it up. Any help is much appreciated.

I would suggest you to:

Suspend all users on Old Server.
Backup using Admin Level Backup
Change IP on your DA License from OLD to NEW IP
Move Backups to New Server
Restore all user/account using Admin Level Backup (Restore OFC)
Unsuspend all users on New Server

This is the easy/long/little-downtime way, you need a second DA License to get two up-and-running DA Server.

Otherwise, you should hire someone to do the entire job without need a second license.

Me, Zeiter, jlasman (nobaloney) are avaible to this kind of services.

Regards

My question is unanswered

I can apply for a temporary license but my question was to unzip the backup in root or admin or somewhere else.

While I am not adverse to hiring someone (assuming I can afford it) I would like to know the answer to my question if possible.

Thanks

I dont know how did you create the .tar.gz file... if is just a big zip of all server from / well i would not suggest to import it as is, probably will cause more problem than solutions.

With the Admin Level Backup you will have everything user-related (and also admin) that you need to restore everything as is (excluding software and customizations, just da related stuffs) and i suggest you to use this way.

Here is what i get when trying to install DA on new server with existing license switching to new IP.

Code:
--2013-02-19 17:22:10-- (try:19) https://www.directadmin.com/cgi-bin/daupdate?uid=38296&lid=114507
Connecting to www.directadmin.com|66.51.122.131|:443... failed: Cannot assign requested address.
Retrying.

--2013-02-19 17:22:20-- (try:20) https://www.directadmin.com/cgi-bin/daupdate?uid=38296&lid=114507
Connecting to www.directadmin.com|66.51.122.131|:443... failed: Cannot assign requested address.
Giving up.

gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
Cannot find the DirectAdmin binary. Extraction failed

If you see an error that says to add --no-check-certificate, recompile wget:
http://help.directadmin.com/item.php?id=119

So, I also applied for a temporary license but evidently it has not yet been activated. I haven't yet tried to compile the new binary suggested in the link until I get confirmation for the temporary license. Using CentOS so is this problem common?
