How do you password protect a website?

I have looked all through the help files, and don't see where it explains how to set-up a password protect on one of my websites, or the subdirectory of that website.

What I did was click "protect" on the Public_html file with permission 750, I then clicked the box for "Use Password Protection" and I entered a "Protected Directory Prompt" word, then a "Set/Update User" word, them the password.... When I attempt to enter the website it prompts me for the user and password, but after I enter them it does not connect. Here is what it tells me: This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required.
Additionally, a 401 Authorization Required error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Where do I look for directions on how to do this correctly? or, can anyone help me to understand how to do this?

Hi chatwizrd,
This is what I did exactly, but it gives me a 401 error when I go try it out. That is what puzzles me, and why I asked for help. Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so, what do I do to fix it? Thanks

I did exactly what that help file said to do... it gives me a 401 error when I try it out. That is what puzzles me, and why I asked for help.

Make sure you are entering the login and password exactly as you set it up. It is probably case sensitive.

If you still are unable to login after checking that then I would suggest looking in the log files for your domain. Maybe there is a reason it is not letting you in and that would show in the error log file.

I am entering it exactly as I set it up, no go.
Where are the log files I look in to see errors, and what do I do when I see an error logged?? I apologise, but this is all kinda new to me, your help is appreciated.
