How many domain can a DNS server host?

I have setup 2 dedicated DNS servers with the following config.:

P4 2.4Ghz
512MB RAM

I would like to know how many domain can the DNS server serve?
Those two servers are used for serving DNS queries only(ie. no web, ftp, email, sql service etc.). Of course, it will need to refresh the dns records from directadmin hidden master dns server.

Since it's only DNS and nothing else several thousand. My guess would be in the ten's of thousands since that part doesn't require much resources (depending on how you set it up)

Tens of thousands. We already do that without breaking a sweat.

With more memory, hundreds of thousands.

Remember that a DNS transaction is only one packet in each direction.
