I have Directadmin running on Fedora Core 2 with 1.9Ghz P4 and 512Mbyte of RAM. It is also running ClamAV and Spamassassin. I noticed its been getting sluggish. Looked at top from console and the RAM was all pretty much used up. Upgraded to 1Gbyte of RAM now. Seems to be running some better although still bit sluggish.

How can you tell if you have enough RAM or CPU power for the job?

The best thing to do is watch for used swap. Linux will happily use up all of the available RAM for cache, etc. but will free it if another process needs it, so watching free RAM is not a good indicator. If you see free swap fluctuating a lot, though, that's an indication that you're actually into swap space meaning that physical RAM is being completely used.

As long as you're not into swap and your CPU utilization isn't 100%, your sluggishness is probably not caused by memory or processor bottlenecks.
