How to change a user name

I have a small problem created by the team setting up test sites using sub domain names of our main domain. We now have 3 sub domains with live sites and want to change the user from the sub-domain name, to the real user name.

Do I have to live with this?

I have searched the forum and found one post that refers to a Knowlegde Base article:
http://help.directadmin.com/item.php?id=58

This includes a sample test script that makes it look very simple to change the user name...

My second question is "does this script work"?

Thanks for your help

That didn't work

Hi Jeff

That didn't work

I used the following commands:
[root@ns ~]# cd /usr/local/directadmin/scripts
[root@ns scripts]# .move_domain.sh khiritravel.net cmintercit khiri

...and got this error message:
-bash: .move_domain.sh: command not found

So I will use the "old" method described in the FAQ above

regards

Daniel

I used the following commands:
[root@ns ~]# cd /usr/local/directadmin/scripts
[root@ns scripts]# .move_domain.sh khiritravel.net cmintercit khiri

Another case of not following directions. Instead of thinking for a moment that they may have made a mistake and look at the directions again they immediately post back here and say that it does not work when in fact it does.

Thats why there needs to be tests before they sell dedicated linux servers to anyone. People just think they can put up a box and be fine. Main reason there are so many compromised boxes out there... very sad.

But don't forget of course that changing a username, or user password, will cause problems with MySQL files.

resolved by doing it the old way

Thanks for your comments Jeff. Yes I missed the slash and will try again later this week as I still have one more to change.

Yes its also true that as a newbie to Direct Admin, I am not used to command line management - Windows is not like that...so the learning curve has been HUGE.

That said, all the advise I have received here has been very much appreciated and adds to me learning curve.

sincere thanks

Don't let them get you down.... everyone has to start somewhere..... :) Linux is fun to learn, it just takes practice in which you are doing. :)

Multiple domains....

I have a user that wants their username changed, this would seem like it will do the trick, but the user has 3 domains and sites on this account, would I need to run this 3 times for each domain, or just the first domain, the one that created the username.

I think you have that backwards. Domains do not create users. Users create domains. Changing the username only affects the user not really the domains exactly. Running it run should do it since it will change the username in all the DA config files. But any scripts in each domain would have to be edited manually if they use the username and as Jeff said mysql would need to be manually fixed as well.

It just calls for a domain name in the command line, so that threw me off.

Oh so you want to move a domain to another user. That is different. I thought you wanted to change a username.

In moving a domain then yes you would have to run it for it domain that you wanted to move.

No, just the username...

The user freemont has 3 domains in his account
I need to change freemont to sunshine, he keeps all the domains, just changing account name.
I just ran this and this message came back
"the new home is blank"
do I need to create this "new user" first?
I only wanted to accommodate the user in changing the name.

Unfortunately...

I searched The DA forum, then the DA KB and never thought of Google....
JOHN.... Improve the search on the KB!!
(when you have time)

Google searches pick up DirectAdmin forum and knowledgebase changes very quickly (I don't know exactly how quickly but today I found a post added yesterday).

They've spent years developing their algorithms; I think it's counter productive to have DirectAdmin staff work on a better search algorithm; there are better things they could be doing.

To google only the DirectAdmin site:

Either use advanced search, or after you type the search terms into google, add a space, and then:
site:www.directadmin.com/

Works wonders ;).
