How to enable zip support in php 4.4.5

In my php 4.4.5 i dont have zip-support, but i need it for installatron.
Do i have to recompile php from ground or do i can add simple the zip.
How to do this? I am absolute beginner and need a simple guide for a debian 3.1 box, also links were i can find this info are welcome. Thank you.
