Anyone encountered clients trying to upload a 30mb file via the File Manager, with them submitting a support ticket saying something like "my files will not upload, why?"... and when I suggest a FTP client they go "what is a ftp client?"....

I do encourage uploading FTP access on my FAQs, but I don't think they understand?

Any thoughts?

For real new people I encourage them to use the ftp that is built into Windows.

Open My Computer (or just Computer for Vista/7)
Make sure the Address Bar is showing
Type into the address bar ftp://www.example.com
They will be prompted for a username and password
After authenticating they can copy and paste or drag and drop their files.

From IE type ftp://www.example.com
They will be prompted for username and password
After authenticating they will be given further instructions

I don't think they understand
I agree.... and as they want a public website, they have to do some research on how to run one - the backend aswell as the frontend......or at least be a bit technical savy.....

One customer kept asking us to help design their site, when we explained that we only offer hosting (i.e. if the server works, that's where our support stops), they cancelled the account!

Perhaps you should write a rather extensive welcome email, including links to explanation pages on your site.

Perhaps you should contract with a local company that does websites; when your clients ask them to create a site for them, just resell that company's services.
