How to setup DA with no domain on server IP?

I can't find a clear (at least to me) thread or guide that indicates how one can set up a VPS server on one IP (without a domain on the same IP) and have the default IP on a different IP.

I seem to run into DNS problems when I have the server on the same IP as my default domain.

How do you setup the hostname of the server if there is no domain to assign it to?

From with DA in the Admin settings I thought all of the examples showed a hostname that was a fully qualified name, for example server1.example.com. and this is associated with the IP being used for your DA install. Now if I have my default domain on a different IP than the server/DA install, what do I call the server hostname. I am probably missing something easy here, but I thought the hostname, if it used the name of a domain, had to use the same IP as the domain. If not how do you set that up?

You can set up as many servers with hostname based on one domain as you wish, it can be 3rd-level domain or greater. All of them can have different IP addresses. There's no known to me limits for that.
