Hi,

We have still some boxes running RH9 and Fedora Core 3 wich we want to upgrade to CentOS 4.1.

Question: How easy is an os upgrade?
- First create a system backup in DA
- Make new clean install of CentOS 4.1 (not upgrade)
- Running the install script for DA
- Restore the system backup in DA

Should that work fine?
Of course the boxes will be down for 1-2 hours...

Kind regards,

decafranky

Note that there is NO system restore for DA. And DA by default leaves out some files you should really have to do a restore.

Manual restores can take a lot of time and a lot of system knowledge, even when all the files are there.

Best bet is to do reseller level backups for all resellers, and keep track of your resellers themselves.

Then recreate the resellers on the newly installed system, then restore those backups.

You'll have to save all the reseller data and their package data as well.

But what is the meaning of the "system backup" feature in the admin section?

I also did i test, backing up a reseller account and restored it on an other server, but the subpackages are not restored (accounts are even not created in DA).

The system backup is just a feature to do a "sysbk" backup of your important files, so in case of problems you can manually restore them. (So not really a full system backup for a full system restore ;))

Remember when restoring reseller backups you could run into some problems with the spool (mail) files. Some of my reseller's users got empty spool files (maybe because they received mails when the restore was done). Just keep retrying them ;)

The system backup is best considered as an emergency backup; it can (depending on configuration) hold all the files you need to duplicate a DA server configuration.

Reseller backups are configurable; they'll do the backups you ask them to do. If you request backups for all users, all the users will be backed up.

Thanks Jeff

I try this out when i have some more time.

I really want to be prepared when (hopefully not) a total system crash (or hardware) would happen.

See my other post several days ago (with an added post today) about problems with the reseller backup.
