htaccess gets wrecked by "Protect" (file manager)

I realize this may have been an invalid thing to ttry but I tried to password protect from within the DA file manager a "public_html" folder.. Firstly without examining the htaccess file I noticed going to the URL of the domain did not prompt for a password so I figured it was just an invalid thing to do, so I used DA to unprotect the folder.

Then I was getting internal server errors, so typical of a munged htaccess file.. Upon looking at the file the thing was vastly different than what it was before trying to protect the folder.

My guess is that the file is being parsed rather liberally to add/remove stuff by DA and it interpreted some of my htaccess at stuff it added.

Yes, I have problems here too.
I followed the password protect procedures in DA,
I also see the .htaccess and .htpasswd files created.
But on my internet browser I do not get the 'famous' little login window: I get the access denied immediately.

Got it working. I read the 'space in directories' DON'T do it discussion of a couple years ago. Initiated by forum member S2S-Robert. I cleaned all spaces out.
thanks,
