HUGE files in MySql folder

I've located these files in /var/lib/mysql that are 1GB+ in size each. The name of the files are all similar and in this format:

server1-bin.###### or server1-bin.###

Any idea what these are, how/why they are being created, and can I remove them? Thanks!

For detailed information check the MySQL documentation. As I understand it, those files contain a log of the exact sql commands run.
