Hello reader,

One of our clients has the following problem.

When he sends out an e-mail he recieves the following error:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

[email protected]
SMTP error from remote mailer after RCPT TO [email protected]>:
host mx3.hotmail.com [65.54.167.5]: 550 Requested action not taken:
mailbox unavailable

Howerver, he recieves all outgoing mail back.

Thank you, :)

In this case hotmail is reporting a permanent error that the given address isn't available.

If you're getting this for known good addresses, not just at hotmail, but at other domains as well, then a bit of research is in order.

To troubleshoot, I'd log in through a secure shell, as root, and then attempt a manual email connection emulation session using telnet.

I'll eventually get around to writing a how-to on troubleshooting email delivery, but in the meantime, the
FutureQuest site has a fairly good explanation.
