Insane amounts of traffic

Hello everyone,

I own a dedicated server with SSH access. It runs CentOS/Directadmin. One of my websites has an insane amount of traffic in comparison with what it should have.

The website (which is a seperate user level account in Directadmin) has about 200 GB of monthly traffic. It has a monthly average of 15-20.000 visitors. The site has no heavy video files or even images. All .pdf/.jpg's that might cause a lot of traffic or hosted off-site, because the site has gotten national news coverage in the past and had serious spikes in traffic during certain days. I made the site as small as possible to prevent outages during these peak times.

This month (as of 16th of november) the user has about 105 GB of traffic. 99.99% of the traffic is related to Apache. The related Directadmin user has only one domain active.

However, when I enter the 'Usage statistics' for the domain in question, Directadmin indicates only 858303 KB (858 MB) for this months total. What is causing all this sudden traffic?

The datacenter also logs traffic usage. The traffic is actually there, it is not an indication error.

Directadmin indicates 100 GB of usage in Apache. However, the site statistics breakdown only indicates about 1 GB of traffic. I also analyzed the top 10 files that cause the most traffic, none of them come even close to a total of 1 GB. Does Directadmin offer me anything else to analyze this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Hi JoostVE,

i've approved your thread, please dont post and repost the same thread over and over :)

Regarding your issue, have you checked with awstats the URL who is generating more traffic?

You're problem is that webalizer show different traffic?
The DC traffig is equal of the DA one or the Webalizer one?
Are you sure that your traffic was correctly turnet to 0 at the start of the month?

Regards

Hello,

Thank you for your fast answer.

I kept reposting because creating a new thread gave me the error:
"Warning: Object of class vB_DataManager_Thread_FirstPost could not be converted to string in ..../global.php(29) : eval()'d code on line 132". I have send this to [email protected] as I was unsure that my post was actually getting through.

I honestly do not know what Awstats is. I suspect this is an alternative to the Webalizer.

My problem is that the DirectAdmin user is showing over 100GB of Traffic over Apache. However, my webalizer shows as little as 1GB. The URLs by biggest traffic (in Webalizer) is showing a .pdf that is being downloaded for about 40% of the total traffic. However, the total traffic of this .pdf URL is only 300 MB.

My Directadmin traffic (total of the user) is equal to the actual traffic that is reported by datacenter. However, I am unable to trace it to a source in the Webalizer. I suspect that the traffic is caused by an error.

I am sure that the traffic started with 0 at the beginning of the month. The problem has been building up over the past couple of months, with traffic that has been increasing ever since.

Hi,

please send an email to directadmin staff regarding your posting issue :)

AwStats is an alternative of Webalizer yes, but is more detailed and is updated, webalizer i think is not updated anymore.

You should install it using CustomBuild to have a more efficent statistics of usage.
