I want to install DA but I only have one public IP
It is possible to make it function DNS included?
a second IP will cost a fortune with my provider here in montreal

PS: is any test licence (like 15-30 days) available?

You can ask for test license by emailing directadmin support.

Some tlds might require that you have 2 nameservers when moving to your nameservers.

However it is possible to run on only one as a 2nd ip in the same subnet is pointless anyways. Nothing should not work in directadmin because you only have one ip.

You may be able to buy slave DNS from someone else, or find someone to give it to you at no charge.

Hi Jeff,
this sounds like something i would like to do also
what is the proper way to create a slave DNS to work with DA ?
does it require another license for my second server?

Would love to hear about this topic some more.

While using DA on two different servers to manage DNS, they both are master servers (so called cluster of DNS).
And you must have two licenses.

If you want to a manage slave DNS, you don't need to buy Directadmin for it. It can be a VPS (2-10Gb HDD, 250-512 Mb RAM) on other network with bind9 or any other software. In that case you need to configure properly server with Directadmin to add/delete zones from the slave one.

any hints, tutorial, on how to do that?

There are two posted on these forums. Mine (free and open source) is Master2Slave DNS Replicator; we use it for our own Slave DNS services and you can find it by searching these forums. I don't remember the name of the other one, but I know it's posted here somewhere.

I wouldn't bother! It's a pain to setup, I would prefer to get another IP, they come cheap from your hoster, some even still offer free IP's, especially if you only need one additional one.

Even with another IP# anyone looking you in a DNS reporting service (for example Into DNS) (intodns.com) will see that you don't have redundant DNS.

Other issues:

When your server is down anyone attempting to visit a site on the server will get a notice that the domain doesn't exist. Not that the server is offline, but that the site doesn't exist. Just as if it was never registered. I'd hope your clients wouldn't want that.

Same problem if/when your DNS server is restarting. I'm not sure (I don't remember) if DirectAdmin ever restarts your DNS server; it may when adding or removing sites (if anyone else knows with certaintly please post).

And IP#s aren't always cheap; it depends on your upstream. We're one of those providers who offer unlimited IP#s at no extra charge with justification, but that could change for IPv4 as they run out and we can no longer get them a /24 at a time. (Justification is actually an industry-defined term; you can't just say "I need one because...".)
