hi all,
id like to install DA on a testserver to check some settings etc. I already have a license for a production server, but can i recon i cant use that license again since its bound to that server's ip... So, is there some sort of testing license, or?

I don't think such thing exists, though I agree it'd be nice to be able to test DA in a local test box.

Maybe DirectAdmin can setup something like RedDot does. We use RedDot at work and when we want to test an upgrade or something, we request a 30-day test license. Not sure how this would work with DirectAdmin, but it is a choice. :) Another option may be a discounted test license or something.

Oh I get it. Actually that wasn't the purpose I intended at first. When I said textbox it's more like for testing stuff before applying them to a production server. Nevermind then, I'm already very happy with DirectAdmin. :)

I think the absolute best thing DA could do is release a free version that was limited in some way (such as no reseller, or only 1 user, or only 1 site, or all of the above). Then we could use it for testing without having to worry about what machine its on etc etc.

It mgth also make an excellent advert for DA if people could run a single-domain version before buying. If they put it on a VMware pre-build then it would find its way to practically everyone!

I'm not sure about the logistics of this, it'd have to have the phone-home licencing removed, and probably huge chunks of code (to prevent hacking of JBMC's intellectual property), but its certainly possible.. what do you think?

It would be excellent if DA have a demo or testing version.
like plesk that automatic activated for 1 domain without license key

So we can test many thing on a testing box before do it on production server.

A test license would be great to have.
Not everybody has the luxury to have more live servers so they can spare one for testing new software.
For myself I only have one server with DA (works perfect now) and had a lot of trouble updating everything with much downtime.
The second server with identical specs is at home ready to be installed buth needs a different install and that can only be done at home due to limited acces to the data-center.
With a test license everything could be prepared and tested before finally placing the serverand saving a lot of (travel)time.
No need for resellers or users just for testing the soft- and hardware and maybe a different OS

Today the need for a testing system is proven again by the update of DA from 1.29.2 to 1.29.3
The upgrade messed up the enhanced skin and toke a while to partial fix the problem.
Not nice for the clients.

I second this. There are many things that I do not attempt myself through fear of bringing down a live server.

I doubt they would appreciate me asking for a temp licence over and over...

Although I think I might to assist with testing a disaster recover procedure

they should make a license that is only available for people that already own a valid license of DA. Just to keep things tidey :)
And ofcourse that testing license would be limitted to a single domain/user.
eg. the admin and user levels are available to the "admin" user, but the reseller level is completely gone.

That would be sweet :)

Maybe force us to use vmware under centain conditions (ip's etc) and only allow axx to da from "local" address, and maybe ask some validation file found only with somebody with physical axx to the server...

I know that this is highly "not possible" as there are ALWAYS ways around things to "go away" without paying, but I guess that it would rock if it's possible to take the risk. (maybe force to run xserver and show the confirmation axx on a window with overlay made my DA team? I really dunno)

Take care

Jose

We are also looking for a way to test DA in a vmware machine. Meanwhile i will mail support@Da for a demo license.

I've seen lots of suggestions on these forums.

All of which require a change in the DA licensing/security module.

You're asking a lot :) .
