Installing/Updating to PHP 5

I did a search and already found one topic withe the steps:

However I am completely knew to directadmin and linux so I do not understand the steps.

I recently got a VPS from knownhost with directadmin and before I install phpBB3 I want to make sure PHP and Mysql are up to date.

Here's what I know the server has Apache 1.3.41 installed. I don't think it's the custombuild. I understand I need to access the server remotely and enter the commands in the ssh. Hence I downloaded putty for windows and have connected.

Now I hope this isn't a stupid question, but I'm stuck on the 1st step.
"Download php to a temporary directory"

How do I download a file into a temporary directory in my VPS? Is it through directadmin file manager? And once it's downloaded how do I find where it is so i can unpack it?

But if this is your first time using linux commands over ssh I highly recommend that you get somebody else to help you.

If you are a beginner then set up a linux machine at your home to play with that first. You can experiment on that without fear of doing damage.
