Hi everyone,

After researched and looked around for info, i decide to go with DA but i still have a problem with my current server that if I'd like to migrate all my email accounts from OS X server to FreeBSD and reload the OS X server for that box to use for other purpose. I wonder if it is possible to migrate all email accounts from Mac OS X server to FreeBSD ?

For FreeBSD box, I am going to use DirectAdmin for web control panel since that box is AMD based. I would appreciate a lot for your help or hint otherwise thanks for reading.

Best,
Andy N.

How is mail stored on your OS X server?

Maildir or mbox?

DirectAdmin uses virtual mailbox accounts for domains; you'll no doubt have to set up all the virtual email accounts first, and then transfer email accounts manually. If you're currently using Maildir then you should probably convert your DA server to Maildir/Dovecot before you start moving the site. If you're currently using mbox you don't want to do the conversion until after you've moved the site.

I'm sorry about newbie question, what is Maildir and mbox? I have searched around and there aren't pretty much infos about them.

It doesn't look like standard anything :( . My guess, since users are directories and not files, is that each email is in a separate file. Is that true? If so, then it can be moved into a DirectAdmin server using Dovecot. You'll have to verify first that this is the case, and if you don't know how to do this, or what I'm writing about, then you'll probably want to hire an administrator to do it for you.

Thanks Jeff. Yes, each folder user has separate files in there, each file is a email.

So it's some kind of modified Maildir.

You can probably create a standard Dovecot system with DA, and then just move (and probably change ownership, maybe even permissions) on all the email files.

Hi Jeff

I found out that the previous guy from my work he installed cyrus and postfix to run the email server (SquirrelMail is used in this server) . Is it gonna be ok if i move the emails from Mac OS server to the Centos + DA server ? Sorry for the newbie question. Thanks
