i have messsed up DA badly
is there a way to reinitialize DA so that it shows
as it did before i began mucking aound
without reloaing ?

is there a good site showing me how to set up DNS and getting new ip's for name servers ?

i know nothing about linux

thanks

It depends on what's messed up. Either it can be fixed your you have to start fresh. It all depends on what isn't working. There are several How To's on this forum, site-helper.com, and help.directadmin.com

thanks for answering
my life since i got VPS is a little bit difficult
i am a new to this side of hosting so please forgive me.

ok
im on vps and running freebsd and directadmin which was loaded for me at the time when i signed for the package.

i done the configuration for i reseller package and 1 domain with a user in directadmin and thought that it was working because i could view the user web page using my browser.
so i got carried away creating more users and 3 more domains
they all worked viewing in the browser using the www.ip/~user
and i was happy.

12 hours later i thought hey i have no name servers then thats were it all calapse.

so i bought a new domain name and in the registras CP assigned ns1 and ns2.ns_sample.com with the VPS server ip
(i only have 1 ip) and in directadmin i created an NS Record to
to translate the user domain to the server ip.

again i thought everything was ok and i was reading up some stuff about directadmin when i came across this.

" You cannot assign a name server to a server-owned IP (e.g. the first IP address in the table above)"
and to make matters worse i had to have 2 more free ip's to for ns to work.

so in admin level > IP management i created 2 more IP's in single incremental steps from the server ip then went to
Reseller Level > Nameservers but the only ip that is there is the servers ip for some reason i just cannot get the other 2 ip's to show up so now i cannot create the name server in directadmin.

if i click on a domain name and click create the the error says i need to choose to ip's but the only ip there is the server ip :(

so i got mad and delete all domains and users and thought i start fresh again but now the problem is on the right side of direct admin it says i have 3 domains and, ftp and email all though i have delete them all

can some please help a newbie out and cast me a lifeline

this is what i want
-----------------------
all that i want to do is host 3 of my own personal sites
i dont want to go into reselling.
if you know any good tutorial it would be nice

please help me out
thank in advance

ps. sorry for the long text but did warn you im a newbie :D

If you're only going to host 3 personal websites, why even get a VPS? It would probably be cheaper to just apply for a shared hosting account.

On the IP management page of the admin level: After adding the IPs you then need to assign them to the admin reseller (essentially yourself).
Then from the Nameserver management page on the reseller level (under admin), the IP addresses you assigned should appear.

again i thought everything was ok and i was reading up some stuff about directadmin when i came across this.

" You cannot assign a name server to a server-owned IP (e.g. the first IP address in the table above)"
Can you provide a link to this information? I have always used the shared IP as one of the nameservers.

If your trying to readd the domains now and your getting a domain already exists error, it is caused by the named records not being deleted.
You will need to login as root through ssh and delete the domains from the named/bind database.

thank you again
i have a good feeling that your answer will resolve my situation
it sounds correct

here is the link where i was reading
http://reseller.site-helper.com/nameserver.html under the sub heading "Creating Name Servers"

the reason why i chose VPS over shared is
i have three 3 website 2 of which tell users what i do
the other is simular to http://www.loot.com/ and it does attract
attention.
over the years i tried different shared host and now im fedup, sick and tired of slow loading pages, intermittent frequent downtimes, techies givin me the run a round or not online, hacking and all sorts of other nonesense.

i decided to have my own server (well, virtual server) and now hope that most of the above does not repeat.

however now that i got my dream it now turns out that it too come with little demons

i will not giveup ill learn, fight and overcome them :D

thanks again for your time and effort

DA says domian already exsist but i have already deleted it

i have ssh to root and list all the files but there is nothing in the list called name/bind database.

can you tell me where to find it as DA now is still reading domains that has long been deleted

thank

i think i found something
while browsing in ssh a file called named.conf as some old zones in it. would it resolve the situation if i delete these old zones ?

That would be it. Also delete the .db files for those domains if their still around as well.

Oh, and restart/reload named.
