any pointers or assistance on getting LDAP server based central address book installation?

You don't indicate the distribution you're using. There are some instructions here for various linux distributions. Search on the page search for OpenLDAP Tutorial: LDAP Server Installation, Configuration, Loading data, Usage Overview.

Note that I googled to find this; I've not tested it.
