I like Admin very well, and I don't know
if my suggestion is at the right place here

but anyway,it souldn't be to difficult to
ad line numbers next to the files I'm working
on ?? so I can find anything back a little easier??

It seems a cheap but maybe efficient improvement
to me, do with it what you want

Now I'm coping everything to my appl
on my own comp costs me time .......

Are you asking this about a particular function of DirectAdmin you run through the web-based interface, or something you run from the command line?

What, specifically?

Jeff

I mean when I'm changing a regular file php or
html e.d just using edit file then I miss the
line numbers like in Crimson and others, so when I
get an Parse error with a line number I have to
search the file myself counting lines,

while some of my files are about 500 lines I hope
you see my suggestion for an improvement

Now I copy the whole file into Crimson and then I
have thank G the line numbers, but this seems
a little time consuming,

I hope you understand me now

Just modifying my sites

Greetings...

I'm presuming you're referring to the file editor built in to DirectAdmin.

No, the built in file editor doesn't have line numbering.

You can of course edit your files locally, on your own system, using any editor of your choice which does offer numbering, and then reupload your files.

it's actually a better idea to manage your site locally than on the server, because then you'll have a local backup.

Jeff

Okay so your solution is there is no
need for line numbers in the file
editor ?!,becuase I should modify my
files local, yes of course I have copies on my
comp. But the problem is that when I
upload them most of the time there have
to be an sort of adjustment in path's ect..

I don't think I'm the only one here...

Its not that I'm not conent or so
but it just seems an easy and cheap
adjustment and is (still) a wish I hope
will be available sometime..

But thanks anyway

I've just read over my response to you, and I don't think I said that at all.

Perhaps because I told you the built-in editor doesn't have line numbering you thought I was empowered to change that?

I'm not. I'm a user. Just like you are.

I suggested local editing for one important reason: the DirectAdmin built-in editor doesn't do what you want.

And one perhaps unimportant reason: No matter what DirectAdmin does to their file editor it's unlikely they'll please everybody; I prefer my own choice of solutions.

As I see it there are two possible paths of action:

1) use the included web-based editor

2) don't use it.

Sure, you can suggest to the DA programmers that they change it, but in the meantime my suggestion will allow you to have line numbers when you edit.

I'd give you the name of a good editor except I only use linux on the desktop so I don't know what would work with any other OS.

Jeff

Well yes I asummed you had to do to something
with DA, because you seem to be a so called
super mod ?!.

Or do you get that name when you post a lot
of replies ?

And the name Crimson, I think that name
was mentioned by me.....

maybe someone of DA will read this sometime,
and think about putting line numbers at the editor
maybe not we will see..

At last I would ask you when you say the DA editor
does not do what you want, in what case do you mean this ?,
I'm rather new with DA and can't think of such an
example myself maybe I've overlooked it or
haven't come across this myself.

I became Super Moderator because the JBMC staff made me a Super Moderator so I could help manage the forum. I consider it an honor and I try to do a good job.

If you want line numbers, and the DA editor doesn't have line numbers, then I think it's safe to say the editor doesn't do what you want.

I think it's also safe to say that no one editor will do what everyone wants; that's why there are so many X-windows based and command-line based editors available.

For example I use the "joe" editor, because I don't like vi.

Jeff

To have line numbers local on my
machine was never a problem,

I'm using more than one editor
and all off them have line numbers

Thats why having to work without line numbers
in the file editor off DA is a little like going back in time

If you say don't use it at all,

I say thats not always efficient because you
sometimes have to make an little adjustment on a file

on the web things often are different than running them
locally..

They haven't made that editor for not using it all (0|-)

Let's stop beating this horse.

You want a feature that's not available.

A few people have suggested options.

You say they're not adequate for you.

Either wait to see if DA adds the feature based on your post here, or write directly to their sales department and request it, and see what they respond with.

But this thread is going nowhere, so it's time for it to end.
